Jaisalmer is named after the Rao, Jaisal, a Bhatti tribe ruler who founded the city in 1156 AD. It was earlier known as Jaisalmer state and is a World Heritage Site. This 'Golden City’ of Jaisalmer is located near to the Pakistan border and in close proximity to the Thar Desert. The magnificent wood- and stone-carved mansions (Havelis) and buildings display the love of the Rajputs towards the fine arts and ancient architecture. Sam Sand Dunes, situated at the edge of the Thar Desert, is a place gaining tremendous tourist attraction these days. This sandy place is famous for watching the sunset and taking a camel ride. The most famous of the local festivals is the camel fair that is held during the winter season of the year.
